The Unknown Story Of the Mysterious Leg Spinner Rehan Ahmed:
Rehan Ahmed, a boy from Nottingham who started as a seamer but had to change his path because his height did not aid his bouncers. Leg-spin was what he decided to stick with only because he wanted to be different from others. During the process of perfecting his googlies and leg break, he found himself one day in nets with the likes of Ben Stokes and Alastair Cook. Not only that he ran to bowl to them in the nets too. The tale does not end here either. The 13 year old Rehan bowled both of the famous English batsmen out. Striking Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan today would surely have been nostalgic for the young debutant.
Inspiration is how he remembers the legendary Shane Warne and the way he has debuted today against Pakistan, it looks he is treading down the right path in his attempts of becoming like Warnie.
Rehan is now the youngest debutant in the history of the original format of the game, Test cricket, to take a five-wicket haul. His five-wicket haul is what brought his side England back into the game. At the age of only 18 years and 128 days, the Leicestershire player has turned the eyes of the world towards himself in admiration. During the match when English captain, Ben Stokes, ended up using all the available options to send the dangerous Babar Azam home, he chucked the cherry in the hands of the 18 year old tweaker who did not fail his skipper and got the job done. However, he did not stop afterwards. Babar’s pricey wicket gave him the lift he needed to get other important wickets as well and so he did. Apart from soaring away with Babar’s timber, he got Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Agha Salman and Mohammad Wasim. Not an easy job for a debutant but of course Rehan wanted to be ‘different’ and so he now is; different and distinct.
The English coach, Brendon McCullum, thinks he is still a ‘raw talent’ and the World can not wait for the beast which will be unleashed once this raw talent gets polished.
Interestingly the prodigy spinner is not only incredible with the ball. His batting skills are also second to none. Though not as precious and wanted for the English team as his leg-spin, his skills definitely increase the amount of things that Rehan brings to the table for the team.
