BBL draft 2022 : All you need to know including how it works and the players involved
The inaugural overseas players draft for BBL 12 is set to take place on Sunday, August 28 before the tournament begins in December.
What is it?
This is a new draft introduced where all the eight BBL clubs will take turns to pick international stars to represent their teams for the upcoming season of the Big Bash league due to commence in December.
Previously, the clubs would typically negotiate directly with the players and their respective agents, but now as part of this new overseas draft system, all those who are interested to be a part of the tournament have nominated themselves for the upcoming draft and over 330 nominated players have subsequently been placed into four salary bands: platinum, gold, silver, and bronze.
When is it?
The inaugural overseas players draft for BBL 12 is set to take place on Sunday, August 28 before the tournament begins in December. The draft will take place following the conclusion of the first Dettol ODI between Australia and Zimbabwe in Townsville.
How will it work?
The draft will consist of four rounds with, all 8 teams having 1 pick per round. The teams must take a minimum of two picks, and a maximum of three picks, and there is also the option to pass in certain rounds.
The first round will be the platinum round consisting of platinum players only, whereas the next rounds will be a mixture of categories and will be as follows:
• Round 2: Platinum or gold
• Round 3: Gold or silver
• Round 4: Silver or bronze
Pick order of the draft:
The pick order of the draft was determined using a weighted lottery system with the first three picks awarded to Melbourne Renegades, Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars as they missed out on the finals last year whereas the remaining picks were awarded to Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers, Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes.
Retentions criteria:
To be eligible for retention, an overseas player must have been named in the XI or as an X-factor player for at least one game during BBL11.Each team is entitled to 1 retention pick, which they can use in any category and at any point.

The final list of players has been confirmed, and there is a wealth of talent in this year’s BBL Draft. The full list contains 332 players from various different countries. This also includes 12 platinum category players and 28 players who are eligible for retention by the team which they played for last year.
