Nicholas Pooran’s Fireworks Lead Windies to Dominant Victory Over South Africa on First T20I: A dazzling display of power hitting from Nicholas Pooran propelled West Indies to a commanding seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the first Twenty20 International at the Brian Lara Stadium on Friday. The home side now leads the three-match series 1-0.
Chasing a competitive target of 175, Pooran made the task look effortless with a blistering unbeaten 65 off just 26 balls. His innings, studded with seven towering sixes and two boundaries, ensured that West Indies reached the target with 13 balls to spare.
The foundation for the successful chase was laid by the West Indies’ openers, Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope, who put on an 84-run stand. Athanaze scored a solid 40 from 30 balls, while Hope contributed a well-crafted 51 off 36 deliveries. Their partnership provided the perfect platform for Pooran’s onslaught, despite South African seamer Ottneil Baartman (2-30) briefly halting the momentum by dismissing both openers.
South Africa, missing several of their regular stars who were rested for this series, managed to post 174-7 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first. The visitors were in early trouble, stumbling to 42-5, but a spirited 71-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Tristan Stubbs (76 off 42 balls) and Patrick Kruger (44 off 32 balls) revived their innings.
Seamer Matthew Forde was the standout performer with the ball for West Indies, claiming 3-27 in his four overs, while Shamar Joseph chipped in with figures of 2-40.
In a notable debut, South Africa introduced 18-year-old fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who became the youngest player to represent his country in T20 Internationals. Maphaka made an immediate impact, claiming his first wicket by dismissing West Indies captain Rovman Powell (7), who was caught at cover.
Despite the respectable total, South Africa’s bowlers were unable to contain the explosive West Indies batting lineup. Pooran, in particular, was relentless as he finished off the match in style, securing a convincing victory for the hosts.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at the same venue for the second match of the series, where South Africa will look to bounce back and level the series.
