South Africa Names Weakened Squad for ODI Tri-Series Opener: South Africa has chosen to field a relatively inexperienced squad for the opening match of the ODI tri-series against Pakistan and New Zealand, set to begin on February 5 in Pakistan. The Proteas have named a 12-man squad for the first game, featuring six players yet to make their international debut. The final squad for the rest of the series will be announced after the SA20 Eliminator.

This tri-series, which also includes Pakistan and New Zealand, serves as vital preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy, starting on February 19. South Africa will play one match each against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage, with the final scheduled for February 14. The series provides an excellent opportunity for teams to sharpen their skills ahead of the global tournament.

Temba Bavuma will lead the side in the first ODI, which includes six uncapped players: Matthew Breetzke, Eathan Bosch, Gideon Peters, Meeka-eel Prince, Mihlali Mpongwana, Senuran Muthusamy. The team also sees the return of fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, who has recovered from a left hamstring injury.

Key Players Missing the First ODI

Head coach Rob Walter confirmed that Keshav Maharaj and Heinrich Klaasen will miss the first ODI, as they are set to join the squad in Karachi on February 9, ahead of the second match against Pakistan. Additionally, the final squad for the later stages of the tri-series will only be announced after the SA20 Eliminator, which features several South African ODI regulars like Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, and Marco Jansen. These players are expected to join the squad for the latter part of the tri-series and the Champions Trophy.

Tri-Series Schedule

The tri-series will follow a round-robin format, with each team playing two matches before the final. The schedule is as follows:

  • 8th February: Pakistan vs New Zealand
  • 10th February: New Zealand vs South Africa
  • 12th February: Pakistan vs South Africa
  • 14th February: Final

South Africa has also announced its 15-player squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, blending seasoned players with rising stars. Temba Bavuma will continue to lead the side, with key players like Kagiso Rabada, Macro Jensen, and David Miller expected to play pivotal roles.

Proteas Squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025:
Temba Bavuma (captain), Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen.

Proteas’s Group Stage Matches in the Champions Trophy 2025

South Africa has been placed in a competitive group alongside Afghanistan, Australia, and England. Their group stage schedule is as follows:

  • 21st February: South Africa vs Afghanistan, Karachi
  • 25th February: South Africa vs Australia, Rawalpindi
  • 1st March: South Africa vs England, Karachi

What This Means for South Africa

The decision to field a young squad for the first ODI reflects South Africa’s strategy to manage player workloads across multiple tournaments. While the tri-series offers a platform for emerging talent to shine, the Proteas will rely on their experienced players for the Champions Trophy. The return of key players like Maharaj, Klaasen, Markram, and Jansen will bolster the squad as they aim to make a strong impact in the global tournament.

The tri-series provides a chance to see South Africa’s future stars in action, while the Champions Trophy promises to deliver high-stakes cricket. With a balanced squad, South Africa will look to challenge for the title and make their mark on the international stage.
