Shikhar Dhawan Bids Farewell to International & Domestic Cricket

Shikhar Dhawan Bids Farewell to International & Domestic Cricket: Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from cricket on Saturday, bringing to an end a remarkable career that saw him emerge as one of the most consistent top-order batters of his generation. The Delhi-born cricketer, who made his international debut in 2010, leaves behind a legacy of powerful performances, particularly in the one-day format where he truly made his mark.

Dhawan’s debut came against Australia in a 50-over match in 2010, and his final international appearance was also in an ODI, against Bangladesh in December 2022. This format was undoubtedly his forte, where he not only excelled but also left an indelible mark with his aggressive and stylish stroke play.

“It’s important to turn the page to move forward in life and that’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket,” the 38-year-old announced in a heartfelt video shared on his social media accounts. Reflecting on his journey, he added, “I’ve told myself, ‘don’t feel sad that you won’t play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country.'”

Throughout his career, Dhawan was known for his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, particularly in multi-team tournaments. He scored 24 international hundreds, becoming a reliable performer in major tournaments such as the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and the 2015 World Cup. His 85-ball century on Test debut against Australia in 2013 remains the fastest by a debutant, a testament to his explosive potential.

Beyond his batting capabilities, Dhawan also took on the mantle of leadership when required, captaining the Indian team in several limited-overs series when the regular captains were rested. His leadership was marked by calmness and tactical acumen, earning him respect both on and off the field.

As Dhawan steps away from the game, his contributions to Indian cricket will be fondly remembered by fans and peers alike. His elegance at the crease, combined with his ability to rise to the occasion in crucial matches, ensured that he will be celebrated as one of India’s finest openers.
