Prabath Jayasuriya’s Spin Mastery Secures Sri Lanka’s Victory Over New Zealand in Galle

Prabath Jayasuriya’s Spin Mastery Secures Sri Lanka’s Victory Over New Zealand in Galle: Sri Lanka secured a thrilling 63-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test at the Galle International Stadium on Monday, with left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya playing a pivotal role in dismantling the visitors’ tail. Jayasuriya’s remarkable five-wicket haul (5-68) clinched the game for Sri Lanka, helping them wrap up New Zealand’s innings for 211 in pursuit of a 275-run target.

Jayasuriya, who has developed a reputation as a match-winner at Galle, claimed his eighth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, with seven of those coming at this very venue. New Zealand’s chase was anchored by Rachin Ravindra, who battled valiantly with a resilient 92, but the visitors were unable to handle the sharp turn and unpredictable bounce that defined the match.

New Zealand resumed the final day needing just 68 runs for victory, with only two wickets in hand. However, their hopes were dashed early as Jayasuriya struck in just his second over of the day, removing Ravindra with a well-executed delivery. Ravindra, who struck nine boundaries and a six in his defiant innings, was trapped plumb in front, a decision he reviewed out of desperation, but the replay confirmed his dismissal.

Jayasuriya completed the job in his next over, bowling William O’Rourke as the batter misjudged an arm ball while attempting a defensive shot. The quick collapse brought an end to New Zealand’s brave effort, and Jayasuriya’s brilliance sealed the game for Sri Lanka.

Jayasuriya’s performance earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award, with his nine wickets across both innings being instrumental in Sri Lanka’s triumph. He received support from off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, who claimed three wickets in New Zealand’s second innings.

Jayasuriya’s dominance at Galle continues to grow as he adds another five-wicket haul to his tally at the venue, establishing himself as a key figure in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. His ability to exploit the conditions at Galle, which often favor spinners, has made him a force to be reckoned with in Test cricket.

With Sri Lanka leading the two-match series 1-0, the teams will return to the Galle International Stadium for the second Test starting on Thursday. New Zealand will look to regroup after their narrow defeat, while Sri Lanka will aim to continue their winning momentum and clinch the series. For the hosts, Prabath Jayasuriya’s form will be crucial as they seek to build on their strong showing. Meanwhile, New Zealand will be hoping for a more consistent performance from their batters as they attempt to level the series.
