Shoaib Malik Takes on Mentor Role for Stallions in 2024 Champions Cup: Shoaib Malik, former Pakistan captain and two-time ICC Event winner, has been appointed as the mentor for the Stallions in the upcoming Champions One-Day Cup. The tournament, featuring the country’s top 150 cricketers, will take place at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, from 12 to 29 September 2024.
Malik, one of five distinguished mentors announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), joins the likes of Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Waqar Younis in guiding the competing teams. The PCB revealed the mentors earlier this week, with each mentor set to unveil their team’s name and logo in media conferences aimed at promoting the event and building the Champions Cup brand.
Champions One-Day Cup Format and Schedule
The Champions One-Day Cup will follow a single-league format, where all teams will face each other in a 50-over match. With matches commencing primarily at 3 pm, except for the Lions vs. Panthers clash on 16 September, which starts at 9:30 am, the tournament promises high-intensity cricket across the board. The competition will culminate in three playoffs, followed by the final on Sunday, 29 September.
Shoaib Malik’s Stallions are set to face the Lions on 13 September, Wolves on 15 September, Dolphins on 19 September, and Panthers on 21 September. All of these matches will be played at the iconic Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
Shoaib Malik’s Impressive Cricketing Resume
Shoaib Malik boasts an illustrious career, having played in the 2007 and 2019 ICC Cricket World Cups, six ICC T20 World Cups, and six Champions Trophy tournaments. Ranked 33rd among ODI players with 1,000 runs, 50 wickets, and 50 catches, Malik’s international career spans nearly two decades. To date, he has appeared in 35 Tests, 287 ODIs, and 124 T20Is, amassing 11,867 runs and 218 wickets. His reputation as one of the most sought-after cricketers in franchise leagues further underscores his cricketing prowess.
Malik’s Vision as a Mentor
Expressing his excitement over his new role, Shoaib Malik remarked, “I am thrilled to be appointed as a mentor for the Stallions, a team with which I have shared many memorable moments as a player and captain. Now, to return in the role of a mentor, is an incredible opportunity. I am confident that I can still contribute significantly to the Stallion brand by sharing my experience and passion for the game.”
Malik emphasized that his role as a mentor extends beyond guidance from the dugout, as he plans to take the field in select matches. This hands-on approach aims to help upcoming cricketers refine their skills, bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket.
Malik is also a strong proponent of the Champions Cup format, which brings together the finest talents in domestic cricket in a competitive environment. He anticipates intense rivalries among the mentors, adding an extra layer of excitement to the tournament.
“In cricket, as in any field, the learning process never truly ends, but it can certainly be accelerated,” Malik added. He believes that the Champions Cup, under the guidance of experienced mentors and skilled coaching staff, will significantly strengthen Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure and develop players ready for the global stage.
While Malik acknowledges that progress won’t happen overnight, he remains optimistic about achieving shared goals with patience and persistence. He eagerly looks forward to the support of the Stallion fans and media throughout the tournament, as together, they work towards developing new champions who will bring glory to the team, the region, and the country.
