Khawaja, Smith Hundreds Put Australia on Top in Galle: Australia dominated the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, reaching a commanding 330 for 2 at stumps thanks to centuries from Usman Khawaja (147*) and Steve Smith (104*).

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia got off to a flying start with Travis Head (57) playing an aggressive knock at the top of the order. Head’s quickfire innings, along with a solid contribution from Marnus Labuschagne (20), set the platform for Smith and Khawaja to build a formidable partnership.

Smith, captaining the side in the absence of Pat Cummins, reached a significant milestone during his innings, becoming the 15th player in Test history to score 10,000 runs. He celebrated the achievement with his 35th Test century, a testament to his remarkable consistency and class.

Khawaja, who has been in superb form this year, continued his impressive run with a chanceless century of his own. The pair punished a sloppy Sri Lankan side who missed several opportunities in the field, including dropped catches and a missed run-out.

The Smith-Khawaja partnership, worth an unbeaten 195 runs at the close of play, has put Australia firmly in control of the match. Sri Lanka will need to take early wickets on Day 2 to have any chance of getting back into the contest.

Australia will be aiming to bat Sri Lanka out of the game on Day 2. With Smith and Khawaja well set, they will be looking to score big and put the pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will need to find a way to break the partnership and restrict Australia’s scoring.

This match is shaping up to be an exciting contest, and with the pitch expected to deteriorate as the game progresses, spin will play a crucial role in determining the outcome.
