Kavya Maran Demands Ban on Non-Injury-Based IPL Player Pullouts

Kavya Maran Demands Ban on Non-Injury Based IPL Player Pullouts: Kavya Maran’s Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) finished as runners-up in the IPL 2024 season, losing the final to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR secured the title with a dynamic performance, leaving SRH just short of their second IPL trophy.

On July 31, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held an important meeting with all Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners at their headquarters in Mumbai. The meeting focused on key topics related to the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, including the contentious Impact Player Rule and player retention policies.

During the discussions, franchise owners actively shared their perspectives with the BCCI. A significant point of contention was the Impact Player Rule, with many team owners expressing their reservations. Notably, Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan proposed the introduction of eight Right to Match (RTM) cards for the auction, aiming to give teams more flexibility in retaining key players.

One of the most vocal participants in the meeting was Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran. She strongly advocated for the implementation of a ban on overseas players who withdraw from the tournament for reasons other than injury. Maran highlighted the detrimental impact of such withdrawals on team composition and balance.

According to Cricbuzz, Maran stated, “If a player is selected in the auction and does not show up to play for the season for any reason other than injury, he should be banned.” She emphasized the significant effort franchises invest in the auction process to build their squads and how last-minute withdrawals can disrupt their plans.

Maran’s stance was influenced by recent experiences, particularly the case of Wanindu Hasaranga, who was bought by SRH for INR 1.5 crore but pulled out before the season commenced. This issue has been a recurring problem, with players like Alex Hales and Jason Roy previously citing workload management and mental fatigue as reasons for their withdrawal.

As the IPL prepares for its 2025 season, the outcomes of this meeting will likely shape the future of the league. Franchise owners like Kavya Maran are pushing for stricter regulations and more retention options, challenging the BCCI to balance these demands while maintaining the competitiveness and integrity of the tournament.
