Jay Shah Set to Become Youngest ICC Chairman, Succeeding Greg Barclay

Jay Shah Set to Become Youngest ICC Chairman, Succeeding Greg Barclay: India’s Jay Shah will succeed New Zealander Greg Barclay as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) later this year, the global governing body announced on Tuesday. At just 35 years old, Shah will become the youngest-ever ICC chairman when he assumes the role on December 1.

Barclay, who has served as ICC chairman since November 2020, decided not to seek a third term. Shah, the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, emerged as the sole candidate for the position, underscoring his growing influence within the cricketing world. Known as one of the most powerful figures in cricket administration, Shah currently serves as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the sport’s wealthiest governing body, and is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council.

Shah’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the sport, as cricket prepares to return to the Olympics after a 128-year absence at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Shah expressed his commitment to expanding the global reach of cricket and promoting inclusivity within the sport.

“We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets,” Shah stated in a statement. “Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

Shah highlighted the significance of cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics, viewing it as a major opportunity for the sport’s growth on a global scale. “The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways,” he said.

Shah’s vision for the future of cricket includes a focus on innovation, the expansion of the sport into new regions, and ensuring that cricket remains relevant and accessible to fans worldwide. His leadership is expected to usher in a new era for the ICC, as the organization looks to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern cricketing landscape.
