All you need to know about WPL teams auction:
Today, in what was a happening event, the awaited WIPL team auction took place. As announced earlier, the maiden season of Women’s Premier League, which is the official name of the WIPL coined by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will have 5 teams and so as many bidders were successful in bagging a franchise each.
The teams will be city-based and will belong to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Lucknow. The biggest bid of the day was made by Adani Sportsline, which bagged the Ahmedabad-based franchise for a whopping INR 1289 crores. Indiawin Sports, owned by Mumbai Indians owners, won the rights of Mumbai-based franchise for INR 912.99 crores while Royal Challengers Sports, owners of the RCB team in Men’s IPL, splurged 901 crores for the Bangalore team. Delhi Capitals’ owners, JSW GMR Cricket obtained the Delhi-based franchise for INR 810 Crore. Lastly, Capri Global Holdings paid INR 757 crores to earn the Lucknow team. In total, the BCCI amassed nearly INR 4670 crores through the auction.

This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity. The #WPL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder. 17 bidders, initially, took part in the auction out of which 7 were the owners of IPL franchises. The tournament is likely to be held in March and 5 teams will compete in the first three seasons of the league while a 6th team will be added from 4th onwards.
