From Ahmedabad to Indore: A Look at the Shortlisted Venues for World Cup 2023

The ODI World Cup 2023 would expectedly begin on October 5 and end on November 19. India will host the World Cup. The following venues have been shortlisted for the event: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, and Rajkot. You would be even surprised to know that the final match would be played at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shortlisted at least a dozen venues for the global showpiece event, with the final scheduled to take place at the World’s Largest Cricket Stadium – Narendra Modi Stadium – in Ahmedabad.

A total of 10 teams will participate in the tournament. 48 matches will be played, including 2 semi-finals and a final. The BCCI has not yet announced specific locations for any match. The delay in deciding the venues is because of the monsoon season predictions for 2023, which would definitely create obstacles for the tournament if not planned properly.

The BCCI is yet to get the necessary clearance from the Indian government. First, getting a tax exemption for the tournament, and second, clearance for the Pakistan team, which has not played in India except at ICC events since 2013. It has been reported that at the recent meeting of the ICC in Dubai, BCCI informed that visas would be issued to the Pakistani team by the Indian Government. As for the tax exemption issue, BCCI has not shared any updates till now.

Following India’s decision, not to send their squad to Pakistan for the Asia Cup later this year, communication between the two countries have come to a halt. Many debates and arguments came up on social media, that Pakistan too wouldn’t participate in the World Cup. However, it is a bit early for any remarks on the topic as there hasn’t been any announcement yet.
