Atkinson Shines with Debut Century, Puts England in Control Against Sri Lanka: England seized control at Lord’s on day two of the second Test, as Sri Lanka collapsed to 196 all out in response to the home side’s first-innings total of 427. Gus Atkinson’s brilliant maiden century put England in a commanding position, and the hosts extended their lead to 256, finishing the day on 25-1 in their second innings.
Kamindu Mendis was the only Sri Lankan batter to offer any resistance with a valiant 74 before being the last man out, attempting a desperate slog off Atkinson, only to find a simple catch for Chris Woakes. The visitors had lost their final three wickets after tea, with Prabath Jayasuriya (8) bowled by a sharply turning delivery from Shoaib Bashir that struck the leg stump. Lahiru Kumara (0) was run out after Ollie Pope’s direct hit from the field, trying to sneak a single to get Mendis back on strike.
The damage was done during the afternoon session, where Sri Lanka lost five key wickets, including experienced campaigners Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal in quick succession. England’s Olly Stone, playing his first Test since 2021, claimed his second wicket in the first over after lunch, when Pathum Nissanka (12) flicked a catch to Matthew Potts at leg slip.
Mathews and Chandimal attempted to rebuild with a stand of 48 runs, but a devastating double-wicket maiden from Potts derailed their plans. Mathews (22) was bowled around his legs, and captain Dhananjaya de Silva fell for a three-ball duck, caught by Harry Brook at second slip, leaving Sri Lanka at 83-5. Chandimal (23) soon followed, glancing a catch to Dan Lawrence at leg slip off Atkinson’s bowling, reducing Sri Lanka to 87-6.
Milan Rathnayake (19) provided a fleeting counter-attack but was soon dismissed, nicking Woakes to keeper Jamie Smith. Mendis was left with the tail and was eventually dismissed, leaving Sri Lanka trailing by 231 runs.
Sri Lanka’s woes started early in the day as both openers fell cheaply before lunch. Nishan Madushka (7) chopped a wide Woakes delivery onto his stumps, while Stone removed Dimuth Karunaratne (7) in similar fashion, setting the tone for a disappointing innings.
Earlier, England had resumed their innings on 358-7, with Atkinson driving England forward with a flurry of boundaries. The 26-year-old debutant was initially given out lbw in the first over, but the decision was overturned upon review, as the ball was shown to be sliding down the leg side. He reached his century with a straight drive, adding to Sri Lanka’s woes.
England’s tail added 69 runs to their overnight score before being bowled out for 427, with Atkinson’s aggressive 118 off 115 balls leading the charge. Asitha Fernando finished as Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler, taking 5-102.
England chose not to enforce the follow-on and ended the day with a 256-run lead, with Dan Lawrence (7) being the only wicket to fall, caught behind off Lahiru Kumara. The hosts are now well-placed to push for a series-clinching victory, while Sri Lanka faces an uphill battle to stay in the game.
