Stokes, a crucial all-rounder for England, sustained the injury last week and will not be available for the remainder of the season. As a result, batter Ollie Pope has been appointed as the new captain for the series. Additionally, Harry Brook, the talented 25-year-old middle-order batter, has been named vice-captain for the three-match series against Sri Lanka.

Zak Crawley will also miss the series following a fractured finger, prompting the need for Lawrence to take on the opening role.

England’s Squad for the First Test:

  1. Dan Lawrence
  2. Ben Duckett
  3. Ollie Pope (captain)
  4. Joe Root
  5. Harry Brook (vice-captain)
  6. Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper)
  7. Chris Woakes
  8. Gus Atkinson
  9. Matthew Potts
  10. Mark Wood
  11. Shoaib Bashir

With Stokes and Crawley absent, the team will rely on the experienced heads of Joe Root and Chris Woakes, alongside emerging talents like Brook and Atkinson. The inclusion of Potts in place of Stokes offers a fresh option in the bowling attack, while Lawrence’s promotion to the opening slot is expected to strengthen the top order.

The first Test against Sri Lanka promises to be a test of England’s resilience and adaptability, with several new faces stepping up in pivotal roles. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as England aims to start the series on a strong note at Old Trafford.
