Jonathan Trott appointed as coach of Pretoria Capitals for SA20 2025
Jonathan Trott appointed as coach of Pretoria Capitals for SA20 2025: Pretoria Capitals, the SA20 franchise, have enlisted former England Test cricketer Jonathan Trott as their new coach for the 2025 season, which is set to take place from January 9 to February 8. Trott will succeed Graham Ford, who was let go after the 2024 season.
A highly accomplished cricketer for England, Trott had an impressive career as a No. 3 batsman. He made an impactful debut during the 2009 Ashes series with a century at home and was a key member of the team that triumphed in Australia in 2010-11. He withdrew from cricket due to mental health struggles during the 2013-14 Ashes series and played his last match in 2015.
Now 43, Trott has enjoyed a successful tenure with the Afghanistan national team since taking the role in July 2022. Under his leadership, the Afghan squad achieved significant victories against England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup. His most notable accomplishment occurred this year when Afghanistan reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 after overcoming teams like New Zealand and Australia.
However, Trott’s signing with the SA20 franchise has led to questions about his future with the Afghanistan team. There has been no official announcement regarding his exit as the head coach of the Afghanistan men’s team, as he signed a contract earlier this year to continue in his role until the end of 2024.
With the third season commencing in 2025, it is anticipated that Trott will fulfil his current contract before starting with the Capitals.
In the meantime, the Capitals did not perform as expected in the 2024 season, finishing fifth in the points table with three victories and six losses in ten matches. They were runners-up in the inaugural season, where they lost to the SunRisers Eastern Cape.
The schedule for the 2025 season has yet to be revealed.
