A T20 League Richer than IPL? Saudi Arabia Brings Plan to the Table:
According to a report in The Age, the Saudi Arabian government has held talks with Indian Premier League owners to ensure the success of its next cricket project. The Gulf state authorities want Indian players to participate in the proposed franchise league. Currently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) forbids Indian players from participating in overseas T20 competitions. However, the rules can be relaxed at the Saudi government’s insistence.
The talks for the proposed league had reportedly been underway since last year, but it would also require sanction from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and approval from its member countries. The ICC chairman Greg Barclay has also confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest in investing in cricket.
“If you look at other sports they’ve been involved in, cricket is something I imagine would be attractive to them,” he said.
“Given their advance into the sport more generally, cricket would work quite well for Saudi Arabia. They’re pretty keen to invest in sport, and given their regional presence, cricket would seem a pretty obvious one to pursue.”
This potential investment from Saudi Arabia would be a significant boost for the sport in the country. Saudi Arabia has previously shown interest in hosting major sporting events, including Formula E races and heavyweight boxing bouts. Cricket is a hugely popular sport in South Asia, and the involvement of Indian players in the proposed league would undoubtedly generate a lot of interest and excitement.

It is worth noting that the proposed league would not be the first T20 competition to take place in the Middle East. The UAE has been hosting the IPL since last year after it was moved from India due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI’s decision to relax its rules regarding Indian players’ participation in overseas T20 leagues would depend on various factors, including the financial incentives offered by the Saudi Arabian government and the potential impact on the Indian cricket team’s schedule.
