A mini IPL seems to be on the cards as all 6 teams in South Africa’s new T20 league due to commence in January and February 2023 were purchased by owners of Indian Premier League franchises.
An open bidding process took place in which Over 10 venues were made available for intrigued bidders to possess a franchise and every one of them got expressions of interest.
The last 6 teams were all purchased by owners of Indian Premier League franchises as detailed below.Newlands (Cape Town) : purchased by Reliance Industries Limited, owners of Mumbai Indians.Durban : purchased by RPSG Sports Private Limited, the owners of Lucknow Super Giants.St George’s Park, Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth) : purchased by Sun TV Network owners of SunRisers Hyderabad.Wanderers, Johannesburg : Purchased by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.Boland Park, Paarl : purchased by Rajashtan Royals owners. SuperSport Park group : purchased by the JSW Sports, owners of Delhi Capitals.
Speaking on this occasion the Commissioner for the new league, Graeme Smith said: “We are excited to welcome our new franchise owners toward the South African League .This is genuinely an astonishing time for South African cricket; the staggering interest shows that the nation stays esteemed in the worldwide cricketing eco-framework”.
Commenting on the selection process he added : “A vigorous bidding process was followed to choose the last six owners, the decision was informed by a scorecard in light of different criteria to guarantee the greatest possible level of impressive skill, freedom, and objectivity to the process.
