Saim Ayub Wrecks Australia in PAK vs AUS T20I Opener: Pakistan took a 1–0 lead in the three-match T20I series after producing a disciplined all-round performance to defeat Australia by 22 runs in the opening match at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Thursday.
Defending a total of 168, Pakistan’s spinners turned the game decisively in the middle overs, choking Australia’s chase after an explosive start. Abrar Ahmed led the charge, well supported by Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, as the quartet combined to claim six wickets and wrest control of the contest.
Australia raced to 21 within the first 10 balls, but the momentum shifted quickly when Saim Ayub struck twice early, dismissing Matthew Short and Travis Head to leave the visitors 28 for two. Cameron Green and debutant Matt Renshaw attempted to steady the innings with a brisk partnership, but Pakistan’s sharp fielding and spin pressure soon derailed the chase.
Renshaw’s run-out triggered a collapse, and Abrar Ahmed followed it up by bowling Cooper Connolly first ball. Australia slid from a comfortable position to severe trouble, losing six wickets for just 44 runs as Pakistan tightened the screws through the middle overs. Abrar was outstanding, finishing with figures of 2 for 10, including the key wicket of Josh Philippe.

Despite a late counterattack from Xavier Bartlett, who remained unbeaten on 34, Australia were left with too much to do in the final overs and eventually closed on 146 for eight.
Earlier, Pakistan recovered strongly from an early setback after Sahibzada Farhan fell on the first ball of the innings. Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha launched a commanding response, adding a rapid partnership that gave the hosts early momentum. Saim struck 40 off just 22 deliveries, while Salman contributed an aggressive 39, peppered with sixes.
Pakistan reached 56 in the powerplay and looked set for a bigger total before Adam Zampa led Australia’s fightback. Zampa removed key batters through the middle overs, including Saim, Salman and Babar Azam, who was playing his 100th international match on home soil.
From a strong position, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals but still managed to post a competitive 168 for eight, thanks to late contributions from Usman Khan and Mohammad Nawaz. Zampa was the standout bowler for Australia, claiming four wickets, while Mahli Beardman and Xavier Bartlett picked up two each.
The second and third T20Is of the series will be played on Saturday and Sunday, with both matches scheduled to start at 4:00 pm PKT.
