Cricket confirmed for LA28 Olympics in six-team T20 format: Cricket fans around the world have reason to celebrate as the sport is set to return to the Olympic Games in 2028 after a 128-year absence. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially confirmed that cricket will feature in the T20 format, with six teams each in the men’s and women’s tournaments at the Los Angeles Olympics (LA28).

Cricket’s last appearance at the Olympics was in 1900 in Paris, where only two teams—Great Britain and France—competed in a single match. Over a century later, the sport’s inclusion marks a major milestone, especially given its growing global popularity. The T20 format, known for its fast-paced and thrilling matches, has been chosen to fit seamlessly into the Olympic schedule.

The IOC has announced that six teams will participate in both the men’s and women’s events, with each squad comprising 15 players. While the qualification process is yet to be finalized, it is expected that top-ranked nations will compete for a spot, ensuring high-quality competition.

Cricket’s return doesn’t stop at LA28—the sport has also been confirmed for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, signaling a long-term commitment to its Olympic future.

The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics follows its successful debut at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where women’s T20 cricket was featured. Australia claimed gold, while India secured silver, showcasing the sport’s competitive spirit on a multi-sport stage.

The push for Olympic inclusion began in August 2021, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) formally proposed the idea. After extensive discussions with the LA28 Organizing Committee, cricket was approved in October 2023 as one of five new sports for the Games.

The Olympic stage provides cricket with a massive opportunity to expand its reach, particularly in non-traditional cricketing nations. With billions watching the Games, this move could help grow the sport in regions like the USA, China, and Europe, where it has been gaining traction.

For players, an Olympic medal will now be among the highest honors, adding a new dimension to their careers. Cricket legends and rising stars alike will have the chance to etch their names in Olympic history.

As the countdown to LA28 begins, anticipation is building for what promises to be a historic moment for cricket. After more than a century away, the sport is finally reclaiming its place on the world’s biggest sporting stage, and fans couldn’t be more excited.

The 2028 Olympics will not only celebrate cricket’s return but also pave the way for a brighter, more global future for the game.
