Glenn Phillips 106* Powers NZ to 78-Run Win Over Pakistan: New Zealand kicked off the Tri-Nation series in style with a dominant 78-run win over Pakistan at the newly revamped Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday. The visitors, after posting a formidable total of 330 for six, bowled out Pakistan for 252 in 47.5 overs, showcasing a balanced performance with both bat and ball. New Zealand will now turn their attention to their next clash against South Africa, scheduled for Monday morning at the same venue.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand’s innings was anchored by a scintillating century from Glenn Phillips, who remained unbeaten on 106 off just 74 deliveries. His explosive knock, featuring six fours and seven sixes, provided the late impetus the Kiwis needed. He was well-supported by Daryl Mitchell, who contributed a fluent 81 off 84 balls, and skipper Kane Williamson, who added a composed 58 off 89 deliveries. The trio’s efforts propelled New Zealand to a challenging total.
Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, with Shaheen Shah Afridi being the pick of the attack, claiming three wickets for 88 runs. Abrar Ahmed chipped in with two wickets, while Haris Rauf, who left the field mid-over due to a side strain, managed to take one wicket before his injury.
In response, Pakistan’s chase got off to a steady start with Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam putting on a 52-run opening partnership. However, Babar’s dismissal for 10 in the 10th over, courtesy of Michael Bracewell, triggered a wobble in the batting order. Fakhar, playing his first game since returning to the side, top-scored with a valiant 84 off 69 balls, including seven fours and four sixes. Salman Ali Agha (40) and Tayyab Tahir (30) tried to keep the chase alive, but the hosts ultimately fell short, bowled out for 252 in the 48th over.
New Zealand’s bowlers shared the spoils, with captain Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry each claiming three wickets. Michael Bracewell also made a significant impact, picking up two crucial scalps to derail Pakistan’s innings.
