IPL 2025: Players to Earn $9000 per Match as BCCI Introduces New Rule
IPL 2025: Players to Earn $9000 per Match as BCCI Introduces New Rule: The 2025 IPL season is set to introduce a new financial incentive for players, with the BCCI unveiling a match fee system that will significantly boost player earnings. Under this new policy, players will receive an additional INR 7.5 lakh (approximately US$ 9,000) for each game they play, on top of their existing contracts. This initiative aims to fairly reward players for their consistent performances throughout the season.
Announced by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah via X (formerly Twitter), this new arrangement sets aside INR 12.60 crore (roughly US$ 1 million) per franchise to cover match fees for the season. The match fee system is separate from the auction budget, meaning it will not affect the funds franchises use to sign players. The fee will be distributed among the 12 players on the team sheet for each match, totaling INR 90 lakh (around US$ 108,000) per game. Over the 14-match league phase, this amounts to the INR 12.60 crore allocated per franchise.
The policy has been designed with players in mind who might have been signed at a lower base price in the auction but have since proven their value through standout performances. Players like Rajat Patidar from Royal Challengers Bangalore, who was initially signed for INR 20 lakh, would have earned an additional INR 1.125 crore last season if this system had been in place.
Shah emphasized that the system is intended to reward consistent performers. A player participating in all 14 league matches could earn an extra INR 1.05 crore (around US$ 126,000) under the new match fee policy, providing a substantial bonus on top of their original contract.
However, not everyone is on board with the change. Some IPL franchises have voiced concerns, particularly about the impact on bench players. Previously, non-playing squad members were eligible for performance bonuses from the auction pool, but the new system exclusively rewards those who make the team sheet. Some franchises have proposed creating a broader performance-based pool to ensure fair compensation for all players, not just those who play every game. Despite this feedback, the IPL management has opted to stick with the per-game match fee plan.
While the BCCI has yet to officially communicate this policy to all 10 franchises, many are also waiting for the final retention guidelines ahead of the 2025 mega auction. The match fee concept was first hinted at during meetings with franchise owners earlier this year, where discussions focused on how to better reward players for their performances.
This new match fee structure could have a significant impact on the upcoming season, offering additional financial motivation for players to perform consistently. It also marks a shift in how the IPL approaches player compensation, ensuring those who deliver on the field are more adequately rewarded. As the 2025 season approaches, players, franchises, and fans alike will be watching closely to see how this new system affects the league’s dynamics.
